From his earliest days as a young boy, growing up on the Grand Concourse in the Bronx, New York, music and song have always played a major role in Ben's life. Whether on the radio or the phonograph, it was the music of Frank Sinatra that would resonate in his ear. As early as the age of five, those lyrics were implanted in his mind and he too would sing along with the music to entertain his mother and father. Those songs would become the cornerstone to a life surrounded by music.
When he was ten Ben began piano lessons and continued to study into his late teens, and always enjoyed giving mini concerts to his friends and family. He also began to sing in the local church choir, and in both middle and high school was part of the choir. He traveled throughout the country as part of the group Up With People, and Ben also took the plunge into theater and performed in both regional and off Broadway, further fine tuning his vocal style.
After high school, Ben was granted a voice scholarship and continued to perform in night clubs with his trio. Eventually he went solo and performed at piano bars in New York's Greenwich Village. Over time, his career was put on hold as his day job began to become more demanding. Although he stopped performing, his devotion to his craft never ceased, and music remained an important part of his life.
Ben has very eclectic tastes in music, embracing jazz, Broadway show tunes, standards, pop, even rap. His musical influences are Frank Sinatra (of course), Mark Murphy, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, and Johnny Hartman.
Today, Ben juggles his time between singing and recording sessions and partnering in a business called Fourty Fifty Sixty, which houses the largest collection of vintage costume jewelry and vintage Barbie dolls located in the trendy East Village in New York City. And now, he's fronting a dynamic and exciting musical ensemble exploring the American songbook and much more.
Ben will always remember his fifth birthday when he received a portable record player and a stack of R&B 45's - it was love at first sound!
